Re: your change in "compression" sound on cranking....the Volvo dlr techs here say that if the timing belt is ready to fail, it will go on a cold morning during cranking when the oil is stiff and the cam and intermediate shaft are reluctant to turn over. Pull your oil filler cap and while someone turns the key, see if the camshaft is rotating as the engine cranks.
(If the t-belt breaks, one or more cylinders will have no compression - valve(s) held open - which will give a very different cranking sound)
