960 engine compatiblity?

I'm new to Volvos but an experienced car builder and mechanic. My brother has a '93 Volvo 960 wagon in which the timing belt or chain broke and crashed the valves. His engine VIN code is 95. I have been looking for a replacement engine and see that several on eBay are listed for '95-'98 year models. What is the difference between the earlier and later engines and can they be swapped? Are the computer and/or other things different, and that makes this change a problem?
