Never thought of this before but the local indy (whom I find knowledgeable and fair) and I were chatting about shocks when I had the car in for something else. I mentioned that at 372,000km it might be time for new shocks in the near future. I place comfort over performance handling for my 1990 745. He suggested OEM as a good all-round choice but thought I should consider a gas Koni because it is less prone to stiffening up in the cold Ontario winter. I had my eye on the yellow Bilsteins from IPD since they rave about them. My indy has them on his hopped up 850 but says they would be too stiff for the winter. They work a treat as a performance shock, he says, but for my needs, they are inappropriate.

What do you think? Is temperature that big a factor? Which shock would give a comfy ride all year round?

He's a good guy. Spotted a number of minor issues when the car was up on the hoist and is setting them straight for a fair labour charge. He also noticed I have upper and lower braces and a thick sway bar up front but no bar in the back (standard setup for a 745 16 valve). Offered me a clean IPD rear sway bar installed for $100 CDN. Sweet. The rear sway was a 'one day' item. Makes me glad that work took me out of the DIY business this week.
