First challenge - if anything goes wrong with the mechanism, and the SR gets stuck in an open position, you really have a problem.
For that reason, the SR on my 244GLs, 1986 and 1988, are shut.
When the SR worked, it was great. Get in a hot car, open the SR, and feek the heated air rush up and out. Drive on a nice-weather day and enjoy. Nice for an evening drive, too.
Drains - one at each corner. Must be kept clear. The SR seals are not water tight, so some rain will ooze in. Most times it is not a lot, and the drains will clear it. Water that does not drain out will drip with radar-like precision, after being chilled, down your neck. OK on a sleepy morning commute??
Seals - takes two to do the job. Last time I priced them at the dealer they were around $75 each.
I still like an SR, wife.sig in her 965 loves it, sunroof and moonroof. Power windows make airflow easier, with front windows up, rear windows half down.
If you have the nerve to repair one, you will enjoy it. Given that your climate is appropriate.
Good Luck,
Bob
