George,

I don't know how much to attribute to the rocker assembly and how much to the cam (bearing clearances, perhaps?), but adjusting it the Green Book or the Haynes way ends up with valves 1 & 8 somewhere between .001" and .002" looser than valves 4 & 5, depending on the motor.
