m41 transforms itself into automatic 140-160 1969

If it's a J-type it is possibly the o-rings in the solenoid, or even the solenoid itself.

A D-type doesn't have the same type of seals in the solenoid. It is possible that the adjustment of the solenoid on the D-type is off, but unlikely.

My guess is that the all the seals and o-rings are not sealing properly due to age. Has it ever been apart?

You should consider a rebuild before you put it in that 544. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself. I checked out an article on vclassics before I did mine. Just take your time and take good notes as you take it apart. I didn't think it was terribly difficult.

You will need a press if you choose to renew the bearings though.
