first thing that comes to mind is that maybe that new distributor cap has a crack in it. It has happened to me new out of the box but un noticeable until I had damp weather issues.
Check the cap closely, make sure the rotor is seated properly. Was the wire from the distributor to the coil also replaced? it rubs on the fender and can wear through the insulation.
