544/B18 Gas Mileage

I can't believe how poor my gas mileage is. I have a 1964 544 with a bone stock B18, duel SU's. This morning I filled up and it took 8.65 gallons to go 88 miles, 10.17 miles per gallon! It has fairly new plugs, new air filters and seems to run pretty well, recently the top end was rebuilt and the carbs were rebuilt. It starts right up, although it takes hardly any choke,idles fairly smoothly and pulls strong when I drive it. Most of my trips are short and I drive it pretty hard, but 10 miles to the gallon, something is not right. Any ideas, appreciate your expertise. Thanks.
