After a two week fight with my 1990 740 I grabed a can of starting fluid at the the parts store. One shot and it started right up. Idles smooth no problems at all. Shut it off and no start. Another shot of starting fluid and it fires right up. I even warmed it up and still no start? So far I've replaced the cap, rotor, coil, rpm sensor and fuel filter. I swapped out the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump relay with known working parts and tested mine. Also tested all of the ECU sensors and found them all to be working. After sitting all night I get a brief attempt to start then nothing. I'm going back to the FAQ. Any other suggestions would be great.
