Shift Knob Tip

I believe your upper shifter shaft is (like the other ones) retained on
the actual shifter by a snap ring and a rubber grommet/bushing inside.
The grommet/bushing shrinks or shrivels and the shifter turns easily.
You could probably buy, make or scrounge a replacement that would restore
the former tightness.
