SC-811 Radio, Alpine Changer, and Ventura Technologies Adapter S90-V90

I'm totally frustrated -- '96 960 -- I managed to pick up a nice Alpine CHA-s634, the 6 disk changer that plays mp3's. I got myself the Ventura Technology Volvo head unit to Alpine adapter (the Version 2 which is what is indicated), as well as the two cables needed to move from the mini-DIN (changer)plug on the back of the SC-811 to the Ventura Unit and then to the AI-net of the changer. The Ventura unit has both yellow and red power wires and I know from correspondence with them that the yellow is to link to unswitched power and the red is to link to switched power -- and I know I've got those hooked up properly. Basically, the CD button on the SC-811 just doesn't seem to do anything. But I don't think it's my radio, as I have access to a buddy's SC-811 which he let me pull and install in my 960 -- exactly the same result. Only when I unhook and hook in the head unit does the changer gets triggered. It works its way through all 6 disks quickly with nothing playing and then shuts down (the radio plays throughout this stage). On an ongoing basis, the radio and tape cassette work fine, but (once I've hooked it up) upon restarting the car (or just turning the key to accessory), I push the CD button and get nothing -- no triggering of the changer at all. I've tried commercial CD's as well as my own mp3's which I know work. Again, I've tried two different SC-811's with the same results. And I do have the Alpine on the AI-net setting. I know the Ventura Tech unit (made in Mexico) isn't as popular in the U.S. as the Peripheral or the Blitzsafe, but I was able to get it cheaply and it's hard to believe that it's not working... but that's my current theory. Anybody out there with these same components? Any ideas from any Brickboarder would be appreciated.
