Coolant temp sensor access 200 1984

My advice would apply to a slightly newer 240 (LH 2.2), unfortunately I have not owned one of your year. In my experience the IAC mentioned previously could cause the problem you experience. It is a round cylinder underneath the intake with an electrical plug in and two hoses attached to the end. I would check this first. The 700/900 FAQ has more good info on this.

The coolant temp sensor can be removed w/o removing the intake if you have patience and small hands. You will have to remove the throttle body however. You will probably want to take a look at the flame trap on top of the oil seperator box while you are under there.
