Well I followed the advice I recieved, and what ever other info I pulled from other posts.
To start I have a 1984 244gl b23. I started several weeks ago . Having an occasional diffuculty at start up . She (volvo) would fluctuate and the engine would rev up and down slightly for a minute then warmed up no problem. Several weeks of this no other syptoms .Occasionaly (1 out of 7 start ups she would start right up then die , but always start right up and do the fluctuating idle thing for a minute till warm) THEN the idle started running low around 8-900. Same start up symptoms . 2 days ago I noticed a buzzing sound from the main fuel pump when the car was running . I parked and went to fix yesterday . No START
I bypassed the # 5 IN tank pump fuse to the # 6 stop lamps . When i did this , reguardless of whether the key was in Aux or not I could hear the buzzign sound comign fronm the main pump (drvr rear wheel). I discounnected it, and tested again and could not hear any sound from it or the in tank pump.
Why would the main pump turn on when it is # 7 fuse and the in tank n# 5 does .
Does the main fuel pump turn on when the key is turned to the right just before ingintion.
What other methdos are theer to test the fuel system as I believe this is most deffinfetly the culprit.

Also I tested for spark . there is spark off the coil . And while I can't seee any spark at the spark plug end I can deffinetl feel a shock in my hand if i hold the plug. Btw the plugs and wires are brand new.
How can I test the fuel pressure? Are ther any other methods of determing fuel related problems.
