86 240 Station Wagon Reat Hatch Problem - Will Not Stay Up 200 1986

The rear hatch of my 86 240 Station Wagon does not stay up. When it is opened, it may stay up for a while, then without warning, come down. This can be a real pain when trying to unload groceries. The cold weather seems to make it worse.

Does anyone have any tips on fixing this? Do the two "hydraulic pistons" which are supposed to hold the hatch up have to be replaced?

If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it.
