Consider the following scenario
1991 740 T AW71 Auto.
1. No OD
2. Test solenoid and discover that it is bad, top cracked will not click unless the top is pushed down.
3. Go to test run with top pushed down OD works several times but takes high speed 55+ to work, Generally accompanied by lifting off the gas pedal.
4. Make assumption new solenoid will fix it, order it install it. Does not work at first, but later works a couple of times. When I disengage the OD switch at 45-50, OD disengages then did not work again.
5. Post again to board. based on advice, flush system, loosen the kickdown cable 3 flats. No Change! (2-3 shift about 15 mph at easy gas pedal pressure)
5. Pull solenoid, check that it is open,Orings are ok, not flat. Blow out passages, OD would kick in at 55+ on pedal let up or once at about 60 on a hill when I let up. When I blew out the transmission body passages I heard something that sounded like a shuttle valve click once.
6. On my last test OD worked but only above 55. Here's where I screwed up! I disengaged the OD switch again at about 50. The unit now refuses to go back in OD.
Plan for tomorrow
1. Pull solenoid and blow out the center passage in the Trans body and listen for the valve click again, reassemble and don't take it out of OD with the Switch. Hope that repeated shuttling on the road trip and the new fluid will clean out the stuck valve! Maybe go 6 flats on the kickdown, 3 back to the old setting plus 3 more tighter rather than looser
So, Gurus, what might be sticking?
The transmission is good and smooth, no problems seen there , but obviously something is either stuck, sticking, or not happy about pressure. From the FAQ It looks like we have covered the bases on exterior problems.
Thanks for your insight!
