If you remove the plastic pan under the space between the grill and the radiator, you can get at the release mechanism. Lubrication can free up the cable and release, or, if it is too far gone, a trip to the recycler may provide you with the parts you need. Also, I suppose, a little ingenuity will allow an alternative solution. Engineers would call it "spontanious retrofitting".
