Hey all,
You may remember a while back, some one was asking about how you get access to the in tank fuel pump, with the "80 litre" tank. Well, if i wanna get access to it, i might as well start by pulling off the front quater panels! Nah, it isn't quite that hard....I found out that the "80" litre tank was an option offered (from the factory, aparantly) by volvo when my car was released. (along with the "Volvo" labeled momo steering wheel and boss, and some neat mags :o).) Well, basically, the extra lump i have in my boot amounts to an extra 23 litres of fuel. The carpet is moulded, etc, around this lump (completely different mat in the boot to ordinary ones!), the tank is steel, and connects through the intank pump access cover in the boot (the tank completely covers this....), this all joins together where the filler tube (under the car) actually turns into two separate pipes! One goes up, through the access hatch in the boot, the other into the ordinary tank... Now i know why i could get 750k's out of a full tank in the city! :o) But i wanted to check my in tank pump, pickup, etc, but, volvo nearly laughed when i told them i wanted to do it.... i mean it is doable, but, probably easier to jack the car up on stands (with an empty tank) and drop the main tank out, b/c to get the secondary tank out, you have to be a triple jointed handed person with 6 fingers, 3 hands, and also, there must be a full moon, and you have to hold the antenna with one hand while this whole procedure takes place....well, not quite that difficult, but volvo reckons that to get the tanks out of the the cars, you first have to pull the whole back seat out, take out the plastic backing thing witht the ski tube hole, just to get enough access...once your worn out from doing all this, you can then jump into the boot (hell, it's big enough to jump into!) and pull out the tank (after going under the car to undo the filler tube connections) and lift it free. Then you just have to access the tank.....simple. Putting it back in, is a reversal. Oh, and don't forget all the vent tubes running along the back of the back seat/front of the boot for venting the extra tank!
Moral of the story, if you have the extra tank (please write if you've found an easier way)sell your car if you suspect the intank pump!!! Bye for now!
