Re: NHTSA battery cable fire recall 700 89

I have an '89 740GL. I received a recall notice for this item from Volvo Canada about five years ago. The fix was very simple, much like the one desribed in the other responses. The cables were checked for damaged insulation, replaced as required (mine were OK) and plastic cable insulation was installed wherever the cables might chafe. Hardly anything you need to go to a dealer for, unless your cables are damaged and you don't want to replace them yourself.

I don't know anything about serial numbers either; however, my car was assembled in May 1989 (final assembly in Volvo's now defunct Halifax, Nova Scotia plant).
