Well first I would say "what brand of water pump are you installing?"

If it is the affordable GMB pump you may have a very rough finish to the

casting in that area. You should use some grit cloth or sandpaper and finish the surface of the area where the gasket seats. Another thing I use

is a lubricant like Dow 111 to treat the gasket and its sealing surface so

the seal is not going to stick or tear. Make sure when you insert the pipe

into the pump that the seal seats without getting sideways or getting

caught on the metal around the hole. Thats about it really.
