Fan clutch 1800 1971

I think the fan clutch may be going south. At 2500 rpm something in there starts to rattle badly and the noise increases as rpm rise. Sounds like a handful of gravel inside an empty tin can. Real nasty sounding. This isn’t engine noise. It’s something that’s powered by the belt. Fan clutch or alternator?
How can I test the clutch?
