Go ahead and get rough. Yank it with a wood screw, or mangle it out with strong pick. The adjustment screw behind it is just a mechanical coupler with an o-ring seal leading to the potentiometer well behind it. In other words, the sensitive electronics are amply protected by the coupler between the tamper cover and the pot. Pretty sure I have a photo somewhere...
