1975 164 dies when put into drive 140-160 1975

Why don't you start with something simple like setting the idle speed a little faster?
Does your car have the plastic H-shaped idle adjuster valve in the hoses connected
to the auxiliary air valve?
I refer you to GCP's excellent IPB at this link, page 11:

On this page look at items 102-104 on the left side for thermal AAV and
items 142-144 directly across and down a bit for the electric AAV.
These are the two versions of the idle adjustment screw.
You unscrew it to make the idle faster and screw it in to make it slower.
