Got a Simons Sport Exhaust from Skandix last week and installed it this weekend.
First thing I noticed, upon opening the box, was the exceptionally clean bends in the pipes. Not the first trace of crimping in any bends in the pipes. Every bend is mandrel bent at the highest level of quality.
The hardware package was complete in every detail and the supplied clamps are not the cheap ones... nice stout "u" bolts and all hardware was nicely cadmium plated. Although the instructions were in Swedish, it was not at all difficult to figure out the installation from the illustrations.
Installation was uneventful. With the old system removed, I started at the front of the car and installed the dual head pipe which is a near perfect fit. I did find that the loop type clamp that attaches to the bracket in the bellhousing area would not fit because it lined up at the exact confluence of the seperate down tubes. I will have to make a short tab to extend the bracket forward. Not a major issue as I see it. The rest of the installation was a cinch. Each piece fits nicely into the last one installed.
The second pipe installed is actually a very long straight-through resonator about 2.5 inches in diameter. it fits closely to the belly pans of the car and the mounts for the rubber donuts line up perfectly to the spools on the pan.
The over-axle pipe slides easily in place especially since I had removed the right rear shock absorber. There is plenty of room either way.
Lastly, I installed the rear muffler.. again, another straight-through design. The muffler mounts to a supplied flexible hanger to the forward most reat bumper fastening bolt.
With all components in place, I started back at the front of the car and installed clamps lightly.
I found that the front resonator fits best and has the best clearance when the the rear hanger bracket is aligned exactly vertical. With the front clamp snugged up I adjusted the over-axle pipe to give best clearance in the the axle-shock-spring area (there is plenty of room to work with here.
Lastly I lined up the rear muffler and snugged up the final clamp.
As a nice detail the rather largish, sporty looking exhaust tip lines up, nicely, centered below the rear overrider.
Finally, it was time to start the car and check for rattles and the sound. Much to my complete enjoyment, the system is absolutely rattle free and has an exceptionally mellow, but authoritative, exhaust note. Nice deep rumble! None of this "rap, rap" "ricer" sound. A real muscular sounding Swede!!!
And how's it work.. Excellent!
The seat of the pants meter definitely says it is a performance gain. With the old pre-67 single outlet system, the engine sounded, and felt, severely choked. Now the B-18 revs freely and accelerates noticeably faster. Without a dyno test, one really can't say for sure, but I like the system a lot and especially for someone looking at a new exhaust system anyway it certainly is worth the price paid, even at the the recently increased price of $225 US. I got mine at the old $175 price and I am just ecstatic. It is a very nicely designed and turned out product.
Thanks Kyle and Per at GRMotorsports for the positive reports on these Simons systems? Short of going with one of John Parkers new 2.5 inch systems, I think this is the best deal going, for the average vintage Volvo fan for a daily driver.
One added note: ground clearance is not affected in any way
Hope this is writeup is useful to my fellow Amazoniacs.
PS, Matthias at Skandix told me they are developing a similar system for Amazon wagons!!
