Just failed annual inspection on the emissions test. Inspector said catalytic converter was probably shot, which was not surprising since it was the original with 540000 km or 335 kmiles.
Sourced a non original replacement since original would be about $730, which was probably more money then what I would get if I sold the car.
The problem was that the new cat was about 4 inch shorter than the old one and I had to fabricate an adapter out of a generic exhaust pipe.
Manufacturer was www.fennosteel.com, part no AV-P765CAT.
It was sold as a model specific replacement part, not a generic requiring welding.
You have been warned.
When I checked the EGR valve before the inspection I noticed that it never closed properly, resulting in the rough idle that had been noticable for a while. Plugged the tube at the intake manifold since the function of the valve is not checked any longer where I live. It has to be installed still though...
Same thing with the Pulsair valves for the secondary air injection. They were leaking so I plugged the two tubes but left them installed.
If I remember correctly somewhere on this forum there was a generic replacement part listed for these stainless Pierburg check valves, but I cannot find this post. Anybody got a link?
