88 245 questions 200

Just bought a 88 245 and I have a few questions. The steering column moves up and down and side to side maybe by about 1/8th of an inch each way. Any ideas on how to solve this. Car has been maintained well but does have 289K miles. I don't know what kind of oil was used but what weight of oil would you suggest? Temp gauge doesn't work and it needs tires but I don't have a clue about how to remove these 2 piece wheel covers. Thanks in advance
