Dashboard gauges dropout 2003

I need help. The dashboard gauges on my 2003 V70 2.4T are dropping out sporadically. Sometimes they stop working while I'm driving, in which case they just stop moving. Sometimes they don't come on at all when I turn on the ignition, in which case they remain dark. Sometimes they come back on while I'm driving and then maybe lock up again, or maybe not. A message "SRS IMMEDIATE SERVICE" comes on when the dashboard does light up. The message may go off after several days but will come back on again fairly quickly. Could the dropout be caused by bad supply voltage to a computer in one of the Control Modules, and is there a relay or a ground I should be looking at. Also should I disconnect the battery before I start poking around, and if I do disconnect the battery can I expect any reboot problems when I reconnect.

Thanks JRip
