Bent driveshaft, how in the hell?

So I was under my brick today, troubleshooting an acceleration/deceleration vibration problem, and I now know the problem, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how it happened. I was going to disconnect the drive shaft and have a buddy tow me around the block to see if it was the drive shaft or the differential. I took the first bolt off the drive shaft at the differential, and went to turn it to get to get to the next one, and I noticed that the drive shaft was about 1/4" out of round. I looked closer and it appears that my carrier bearing is gone... I'm headed to the junkyard tomorrow to get a new drive shaft with carrier bearing and support, but am left scratching my head as to how the hell this could have happened. Any ideas?
