Heat Shield Between Rear Muffler and Body - Trailer Hitch 200 1993

Hello All,

I've enjoyed getting help from BB'ers as I waded through problems. Here's another.

I've begun the process of installing a OE trailer hitch on my 93 wagon and spent about 3 hours last night removing rusted hardware to loosen the rear valance along with the stiffener and tow bar. I also cut the valance, hopefully properly, to let the round section of the tow hitch through.

However, in order to proceed further, I need to either remove or alter the attachment (which won't be easy) of a flat sheet metal heat shield between the rear muffler and body because it's in the way of the large angle section of the hitch that attaches to the frame of the car.

Has anyone removed this sheet metal without torching their car? I believe this is my last hurdle before hitch installation, assuming I can get the two existing frame through-bolts out. BTW, I believe I have the proper hardware that the PO gave me.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Marty Wolfson
