S40-white smoke 2000

My S40 is having a problem with white smoke coming out the exhaust. It doesn't do it all the time--the oil was overfilled at one point and since then has been changed on a regular interval. The car isn't running hot and there is no water in the oil. When it smokes, it has an awful smell like something burning. Suggestions?
