My '98 S90 has no illumination of the position of the shift lever.
There is a small rectangular light that moves with the shifter, but it does not tell me if I am in D or 3 or 2. At night the tach is the only clue that I am in the proper gear. It becomes really important in towing a trailer in hilly country.

Is this what the factory intended or do I have a bulb out?

Daughter's '96 850 has the same problem.

Did you get this problem fixed? If so, how hard is it to repair? I have the same problem on mine and I was going to do an identical post.

How many ever bulbs there are, it may require removal of the center counsel, as hard as that is to believe. I had my shift position indicator out when I purchased the car and was required to meet inspection. As I recall it cost me about $80 to replace at the dealer where they can hold you hostage for inspection. So do it yourself if possible.

I must say if there is one aggravating characteristic of this car, it would be the incredibly fragil status of the lighting system. Dash and toggle lights don't seem to last, and I have lights for push buttons 3-6 on the radio out. And, it's usually so involved just to get to them.

It may sound completly nerdy but seeing every bulb lit on the '93 960 at night is a soothing thing.
This has involved some nervous moments wrastling with wood veneers and thin plastics!
Take the plunge and do the radio, it's posted on Brickboard.

Replacement of the bulb is covered in FAQS.
Rather than the intergral bulb holder assembly described, my local dealer sold me a single bulb.
Looks like a fiddly if doable job.

You have a light out or maybe two. There should be a red idicator beside the shifter and also a light to show the PRND3L. The red light shows where the shifter is at and the others light up the gear selection.
