Reseting Service light on 240 1991 Need help, tried these ways: 200

Service engine light is still on, can't get it to turn off even when I:
1. Press in the button for 10 & 30 seconds on the far bottom right when Key is in switch notch II
2. Press in the button for 10 & 30 seconds on the far bottom right when Key is in switch notch III (when the car is on)
3. Press in the button when I turn the car on

If I unplug the battery for a certain amount of time, will this kill it? What am i doing wrong? Thanks.

I just reset the service light on my 1990 240 today.
You have to push in a lot further and a lot harder
than you think. My first attempts were not agressive
enough. I agree with the previous post, a small
phillips screwdriver works well.

Good luck with it.

You have to push the button in a loooong way. I use my smallest Phillips screwdriver. The button pushes a flexible rod of some kind that runs inside a tube all the way across to the back of the speedometer, where it flips a tiny switch. If all else fails, you will have to stand on your head and reach up to flip the switch directly.

Wow, pretty low miles. It is just getting broke in.

I don't think the key position matters, and I know that disconnecting the battery won't do anything but loose your radio code.

The reset button is notoriously difficult. They all are, but at least on a '91 they put it where you can get at it without standing on your head.

I usually do it with the car running, but I don't think it matters. After I change the oil, I grab the awl from my toolbox and get in the car to start the engine to check for leaks. After I start it and the oil pressure light goes off, I press the reset button using the awl. Sometimes it takes a couple of presses to get the light to go out.

If the switch fails and you cannot get the light to go out, remove the bulb. Most of us change oil more often than the service light indicates anyway.
