So, I went to look at the 245 turbo again, and have some questions? 200

I think that I still want the car. It drives great, but there is a coulple of things that concearn me. It appears that the windows in the back have been resealed, what does this mean in terms of rust and leaks? Also, I noticed a little surface rust in just one corner of the winsheld. The rest of the car has a great paint job and looks great. He wants $2000 for the car. It has 220,000 miles on it. The turbo was repalced 40k ago. The over drive has been replaced and the wireing harness. I guess there was a total of about $27,000 in maintance on the car. The car was a one owener dealor serviced car until one year ago when the current people are selling when they bought a minivan. I'm tempted by the car. IT looks very nice and runs great, I'm just not sure about the price, for the things that I was wondering about. Thanks for any information and happy bricking.

Leaky rear cargo windows cause rust problems in two areas, the floopan just behind the front seats, and the spare tire wells.

The only way to repair it correctly is to take the windows out, clean, use rust sealer, and repaint everything.

If resealing the windows means smearing some silicone around the base, that doesn't cut it.

    Seriously overprice, IMHO. 200

I sold an 85 with 140K on it for $600 last year. The fellow who bought it (for his wife) works at the shop where most of my maintenance is done.
Had no other offers-- and he is tickled pink.

5 years ago we paid $1500 for an 86 245...our first volvo...it was not near as well maintained as the one you are talking about with NO turbo and I had to replace the wire harness my self...showing 150,000 on a broken odometer...spotty records showing the same milage for 4 or 5 years back..of course rust here is not an issue...but I do not regret the purchase for a minute it is still one of the nicer cars we have ...and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I needed another car....I would probably make room for a turbo...

    resealed? 200

If you mean they have new rubber aound the windows, great! It could be that hey did not enjoy the whistling wind ... if you suspect massive rust wouldn't it show elsewhere also? Underneath, roccker panels, spare tire well etc...

If you suspect filled in areas from previous rust wouldn't you see repaint signs?

2k @ 220k mi. no way the only way this car would be worth that is if it had a complete engine rebuild new bushings and was nearly perfect. I understand that you like the car but a 20+ year old car should be closer to 1k. I don't know where you are but I can buy a early 90's 740 turbo w 150K for around 3k or a n/a 240 for the same. I bought a 93 240 Classic with a real 67k ,yes I didnt believe it until I had done a complete service, for $2000. The 240 t was a great car in its day but you can get a lot more car for 2k.

I'd look very carefully for any signs of bodyfill or patching of holes. If that rust spot is in the lower corner of the windshield you can count on taking the windshield out to properly repair it, probably means the drain has been clogged for a while. And the rear windows - they're held in with a rubber gasket. You say it looks like they've been resealed - do you mean there's sealant or adhesive around the windows? That's usually a sure sign that the carpets have been soaked a few times, so yank off the trim in the door frame that covers the edge of the carpet & pull the carpet back far enough to see the inner rocker, look for corrosion damage (ie, holes in the seam between floor & rocker). Feel for dampness in the carpet & the underlay, indicating there's still a leak. Sounds like a nice car, but beware the shiny new paint job - I expect most of us have learned the hard way what sins can lurk beneath that. IMHO the best car to buy is one with faded, original paint - you know exactly what you've got.

This car has no roof rack or any signs that there was one. Is this uncommon?

Not uncommon to not have the roof rack, my 84 245T does not have one. I watch
prices pretty regularly in this area (midwest) on Volvos - $2000 does not seem high to me if the car has no serious issues, i.e. serious rust, major mechanical, etc. and starts, stops and handles properly. 240 prices are all over the map from what I see, under $1000 for beaters, $1000-2000 for average cars, over $2500 for the later models which are well maintained (even with high miles). Again, make sure no large issues are pending....

That's not a bad price, given what you've told us. Some areas of the country have many more of these cars in nice condition, so some folks will pay less according to the supply of cars in their area.

$2,000 isn't a bad price for any clean car in good running condition (well, it might be pushing it for a Yugo if you could still find one!) Given Volvo's good reputation for engineering and the long life of their products - when given proper care - I'd think this might very well be a good buy.

Also, the car is approaching the point where there will be little depreciation. A few years and the value might begin to climb.

I'm only speaking from experience, having owned well over 100 cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats. My current driver is a 1964 Volvo PV544 with over 400,000 miles on it. I was happy to pay $4,100 to get it!
