kick-down cable adjustment? 700 1990

I just purchased a 1990 760 turbo automatic with 177k. I have shifting issues.
It shifts late into 2nd and 3rd. It shifts alright if I let off the throttle at the appropriate times. It doesn't shift into 4th at all unless I let off the throttle. And it will only shift into overdrive if I am over about 63mph on the flat with rpms almost at 4k.

From what I have read in this forum, it sounds like a kick-down cable issue.
I read the FAQ on how to adjust it. It says to let the cable spring back so that you can hear it hit it's stop in the tranny. The cable seems to operate fine (doesn't seem "sticky"). However, I don't hear it hit it's stop. It seems like the crimp on the cable stops it before it gets there. I am thinking that I have to remove the crimp to allow the cable to go far enough in the sheath to hit it's stop.

This seems to important of a step to have omitted it from the adjustment instructions in the FAQ. So, I am thinking that I am missing something.
Will somebody please share their knowledge of how the crimp affects adjustment.

Thanks for your help.
