Just front Bilstein HDs? 200 1989

For reference, I've got the ipd 25/22 mm sway bars installed, but otherwise my suspension is stock.

Reading about 240 sport handling on Anthony Hyde's Volvo Turbo World, he states that Bilstein (HD?) shocks do wonders for improving the front end handling of a 240. However, "the value of high performance rear shocks on the 240 is not clear cut."

How could I expect the handling of my car to change if I replaced only the front struts with Bilstein HDs, and left in the stock rear shocks? It seems to me there would be more understeer but less (front) body roll. Would there be safety or serious handling issues with this setup of which I should be aware?

The reason I'd be inclined to make this change is because of the apparently neglible handling improvement through upgrading the rear shocks and yet the cost of doing so. If the handling would not be improved in replacing only the front struts, then I will be discouraged from doing that, and if the safety of my car would be compromised, then I'll wait until I can afford everything, cost regardless.

The Konis are out of my price range (rear or front), but is there any other alternate change I could make? At a little over 110,000 miles on what I believe to be original struts and shocks, I get the feeling it's time to replace everything. Would an install of Bilsteins in front and Boge/Bilstein TC in back produce a better-handling, safe suspension?

What experiences with different shocks and struts have you guys had? What would you recommend?

I realize now that you really do have to break in the Bilsteins. As it stands now, I've got HDs on all four corners of my 765. IMO the rears are just about perfect, but the fronts feel too stiff.

OTOH my friend's 245 w/ HDs all around (about 80,000mi on them) feels significantly softer than my wagon.

Suffice to say that the HDs were a significant improvement over the Nivomats (which weren't dead). If you really want to do HDs all around, just do the ones you can afford first.

I think that may have more to do with the differing cars though... I'm pretty sure the 700 series have a rougher/harsher suspension than the 200 series. Including when comparing the same shocks... I've never heard of breaking in shocks before either, but yeah. My $.02

    Hello,

I know that all of yall are referring to the sedan, but my setup is a little different.

    1) i installed the bilsteins t/c and not the HDs, all-way-round.
    2) it's on a wagon.

after installing the t/c, i've noticed over the stock rear shocks that i can carry a full load in the rear & in the back bench and still have great control in turning and in taking dips & humps going up to 80 mph. i do have the ipd upgraded sway bars (25/22), which helps a lot.

i couldn't afford the HDs at the time. but i can imagine the support these could have over the excellent t/c support in my wagon.

    just a thought.

    regards,

i have bils H.D. on front and back. i dont know about only running front bils but the rear are not as stiff as the fronts im my opinion. i hope the roads are pretty decent if you go with heady duty bils. good luck

Bigger difference with just the rears 200 1989

I drove around for about 3 months with stock non-turbo boge's in the front and HD's in the rear of my wagon, and the difference was just mind blowing. Now I have HD's up front, and lowering springs on and I still love it.

Interesting. What was it that caused you to install only the rears and not the fronts at the same time? Were these non-turbo Boges new, or had they been in your car for many years/since it was built?

I'm still thinking I'm going to go for the fronts first and then see about the rears. If I'm satisfied, perhaps I'll worry about other things before installing Bilsteins in back, if at all.

It will be wonderfully improved, probably 90% of a 240 with Bilstein sports all around (of which I have three examples). The fronts do all the important stuff. I did the same with the 780 which has Nivomat rears and the handling is great. I intend to replace the Nivomats with Nivomats if they go bad.
