Trailer hitch 200 1989

I sold both of my Jeeps and bought a 1982 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel (so I can use the biodiesel that I make for my daughter). Now I have no way of hauling anything. I have a 5 x 10 trailer that I think the Volvo will pull with no problem, all I need is a hitch. Any ideas where to get one? Is there one brand that is beter than another? Do any of you have one you want to get rid of?

Thanks for your help,
Tony T

    OEM Hitch Caveat 200 1989

    One other thing --
    .
The OEM hitch receiver (2-in square) ended up not quite level, but pointed slightly upward, though it does clear the bumper (barely). To do it again I would use washers with the four M10 bolts to shim the receiver downward.
    .
Also, for the OEM hitch (curved pipe; not straight like the DrawTite hitch), the plastic fascia piece covering the muffler just needs a hole cut in it. I started with a notch and kept enlarging it. Instead, try to leave it connected across the bottom; it would help the support brackets and the looks.

    Harness Recommendation 200 1989

The Volvo dealer here recommended and ordered a Hidden-Hitch #31824 POWERLINE SMART POWER CONVERTER. This uses separate power for the trailer lights, and signals from the stop and turn signals on the car just for on-board relay activation. It keeps the bulb failure light off.

I used the existing green wire to the power antenna connector (unused in my 1990 240 sedan) for power, instead of a new dedicated wire from the battery. It tested fine on a 4 x 8 UHaul with the LED lights.

Whatever hitch you end up with, the rear valence is in the way.

From an earlier post I know there is a method of cutting an oval hole for the receiver and its adjoining braces. The shop that installed a Draw-tite on my 1988 244 made a bit of a mess of that, so it would behoove you to DIY or watch them work.

IMHO the Draw-Tite is the only way to go. I was able to make a hole in the pin which holds the ball mount bar in the receiver, so I can use a small padlock. I know that the trailer could still be stolen, but the padlock makes it more difficult.

Next step is the wiring. Post with what you use and how well it works, OK?

    Good Luck,

    Bob

PS: I am in Houston, TX and I have a surplus non-Draw-Tite hitch, no bolts.

I just installed the draw tite model. Anyone have any suggestions on wiring harnesses? What to but - what kind of harness, etc?

I made up my own trailer wiring in the trunk with some relays and bits of wire from my parts box...cost would have been about $12 to buy the parts new. Then I bought a 4-wire trailer plug set for about $4. Done, and works fine, doesn't affect the car's bulb failure device.

It's not as clean as the gen. Volvo harness from the dealer, but I'm FAIRLY sure I saved some money!

Don't know if they would still stock one, but about 5 yrs ago I had a must-tow situation on short notice and got a hitch from a local U-haul agent. I believe it was a Draw-Tite, anyway it fits just fine and the only hassle was that it required removal of the rear valence that hides the muffler. It was only about $160Cdn installed. It's a Class 2 and has worked fine for occasional hauling of light utility trailers.

Just finished installing an OE hitch on a 90 sedan (2-inch square receiver). Found it on eBay a while back, though a bit pricey. Make SURE you get the two M14 x 2.0 x 120mm bolts, and make sure they are threaded about 70mm.
There are instructions for the DrawTite model online that detail the installation & required hardware. Let me know if you’d like them.

      Hi Jim,
I'd love to have the instructions for the DrawTite, it seems to be the only one I can find.

      Thanks,
