NO START Follow Up. Performed several checks and I need Help. 200

Well I followed the advice I recieved, and what ever other info I pulled from other posts.

To start I have a 1984 244gl b23. I started several weeks ago . Having an occasional diffuculty at start up . She (volvo) would fluctuate and the engine would rev up and down slightly for a minute then warmed up no problem. Several weeks of this no other syptoms .Occasionaly (1 out of 7 start ups she would start right up then die , but always start right up and do the fluctuating idle thing for a minute till warm) THEN the idle started running low around 8-900. Same start up symptoms . 2 days ago I noticed a buzzing sound from the main fuel pump when the car was running . I parked and went to fix yesterday . No START

I bypassed the # 5 IN tank pump fuse to the # 6 stop lamps . When i did this , reguardless of whether the key was in Aux or not I could hear the buzzign sound comign fronm the main pump (drvr rear wheel). I discounnected it, and tested again and could not hear any sound from it or the in tank pump.
Why would the main pump turn on when it is # 7 fuse and the in tank n# 5 does .

Does the main fuel pump turn on when the key is turned to the right just before ingintion.

What other methdos are theer to test the fuel system as I believe this is most deffinfetly the culprit.
\
Also I tested for spark . there is spark off the coil . And while I can't seee any spark at the spark plug end I can deffinetl feel a shock in my hand if i hold the plug. Btw the plugs and wires are brand new.

How can I test the fuel pressure? Are ther any other methods of determing fuel related problems.

    Hey Newbie.

Try this to check for fuel flow.
    1. loosen the 3 bolts holding down the fuel rail
    2. gently pull the fuel rail off.
    3. put a clean rag or paper towels down under the injectors.
    4. get a helper.
    5. turn the key to on, but don't start.
    6. check for any injectors leaking (shouldn't be any, but check anyway)
    7. have helper crank engine for a few seconds.

if the pumps are working correctly the injectors will fire right away and you will see it. If they are not, check the main pump is working, by placing your hand on it while cranking (again with a helper obviously). if that is working, go to the intake pump and pull off the 'out' hose from the pump. this hose is not marked, just find the hose going to the main pump. crank the engine again, if it is working fuel should flow out of the pipe you pulled the hose off.

    Good Luck

      5. turn the key to on, but don't start.

That won't do anything on an '84, if you thought it would run the pumps to test for injector leaks.

Need to either jumper +12v at fuel relay harness (30 to 87), or to fuse 5 left contact, using +12v from any fuse 6—10 left contact.
