Programming a Remote S90-V90 1998

Just got a used remote for my '98 S90.
I have one that works fine, and this is to be the second.
Batteries measure good, but it does not work when I use the programming procedure that i have.
I am turning the ignition on and off four times. Then turn it on again and leave it on while pushing any button on the remote, once.

The remote is a two button with the top button saying Lock/Panic and the bottom button saying Unlock.

Is this the right procedure?
Do I have to pay a dealer to do it?
I have heard that dealers can test a remote by sensing the RF emitted by it.

Thanks in advance,
S'V'

With new batteries, the remote fob itself should chirp when either button is pressed.

I had to buy 4 on eBay before I got one that worked.

Note - any good locksmith can test the fob to see if it's sending an RF signal, even a Volvo fob

My recollection is a bit fuzzy, but I thought you had to reprogram all remotes at the same time, that is one after another.

Make sure all doors, hood and trunk are closed. Push a button on transmitter after key is turned on for the 5th time, not before. This according to my owner manual for 97 V90.

If your 1998 is as good as my 1998 V70, then you have to take it to the dealer! ONLY the professional ripoff artists can program it, for a small fee of course. I think mine said something about $50-$75, but I don't remember because of the shock.

I have to turn mine 97 --960 off and on 5 times for programing to work, you should see the red sensor light start blinking on the top of the dash on the passenger side of the car.
Hope that helps

Are you saying I have to turn the ignition OFF after I turn it on the 5th time?
Never noticed the light blinking.
Does that mean when it is blinking it is ready to accept the button push on the remote?
Do I have to close the door? I had left it open.

S'V', a bit confused but gonna try it anyway.

Turn it off and on five times and then turn it back on again, the red light blinking means it's ready to program.

No joy!
All suggestions have been tried to no avail.
Remote still does not work.
I am thinking that there is a detail I am missing.
Next step is is to go to dealer. Groan!

Group:
Finally got the new remote to work! New batteries.
However the car now does recognize the original one!
Programmed the original again and it does not recognize the new one.
In other words both remotes work, but the car recognizes only one of them at a time.
A '98 S70 comes with two remotes, so I expect that the S90 will also.
Is in in the design that the car cannot accept two remotes?
A high-end car like this?
Dealer wants $55 to program it!

GUARD ALARM II
1) Ensure all doors, hood, and trunk are closed. Turn
ignition on and off at least 5 times in 10 seconds. Indicator LED
should start to flash. Leave ignition on. Once indicator LED starts
flashing, first remote control must be programmed within 15 seconds.
2) Press one button on one remote control. Programming is
acknowledged by indicator LED lighting for about 2 seconds. Indicator
LED will then start flashing for 10 seconds. Program other remote
control within 10 seconds while indicator LED is flashing. Turn
ignition off. Test remote controls.

Hot Dog!!!!

Worked like a champ! I had to watch the LED more than count my on/offs, but I got it done.

I'm out of the dog house:) What a great resource.
