differential pinion seal - is scantech okay? what else is available? 200 1986

The aftermarket seals seem to all be scantech. Is s this something I should go to the dealer for?
Any additional advice for doing the work?
Thanks,
Tom

I bought one from fcp listed as OEM. It was made in Mexico by Chicago Rawide a SKF company. It seemed ok. I used an air gun to remove the pinion bolt and a puller to remove the flange. Also made a hold bar that bolts to the flange out of angle iron to hold it when re-torquing. The pinion bearing is loaded by the torque on the bolt so I marked the bolt, flange and shaft so I could re-torque to the same level. It took a little while to pry out the orginal one and not nick the flange.

FCP Groton sells (or used to sell) the original item for less than my dealer charged. I'd ask them; I agree about avoiding Scan Tech.

    Tom,
Scam-Tech is to be avoided for any part that takes over 15 minutes to install or draws blood i.e. skinned knuckles. The price difference is not worth it, buy dealer.
