Exhaust to tranny support bracket question (1990 740) 700

I was looking around underneath the car (1990 745 16V, 4sp+od) the other day and spied the exhaust support bracket at the transmission. I noticed that it was a metal to metal contact, ie, the exhaust is bolted to the tranny in a fixed relation; no flex. Makes sense, I guess, from a support point of view but wouldn't this transmit exhaust noise direct to the tranny which is separated from the car's interior by not very much (what, a rubber boot?). I wonder if a rubber shim placed between the bracket and tranny would make things quieter without any significant loss of support?

Or am I missing something?

The bracket you refer to was actually installed to reduce noise and vibration from the exaust system. Without it, the pipe can really get to strumming like a banjo.

Interesting, thanks. Do you think a rubber shim would further reduce the noise transmission without compromising the anti-banjo effect? Seems to me it would.

It may not be a bad design. The tranny is solidly joined to the engine and the “mass” is isolated from the body by the two engine mounts and the tranny mount. Ideally, there should be a hanger between the bracket and the pipe but it is kind of tight in there.
