Electrical Battery Light drawing system (help) 200 1983

When I turn my car off. (83'242dl.B23) The check battery light stays on. Then, when I turn the key to the on position right before starting it, the check batt. light goes out and the oil light turns on. Note: None of the other engine startup warninlg ights (at the bottom of the instrument cluster) turn on when the key is turned to the on position, only the oil. (And yes, they all worked perfectly at one point) Then, the car starts normally and the light turns off like normal and car is fine to drive (no other warning light stays on).
I have recently returned a new battery(unless that one is bad as well) so, it should not be the battery. Is it the ignition switch? Alternator? Some other wiring? Fuse panel? Is there a reset button? Might the new battery be bad as well?

That check battery light is one of the wires going through the under-the-engine front harness. It is part of the crumbling insulation problem common to 240s 1982-1988.

That harness can be re-built separately from the rest of the harness. There are but three wires, and only two go bad, usually.

Look at the alternator for the thin wire coming from that harness. The insulation is red, but likely there is none present. Remove and reinstall the spade lug connection on that wire, to be sure that the connection to the alternator is good.

There is also a thin black wire from that harness which connects to the oil pressure sensor. It, too, will have missing insulation.

The warning light for oil pressure operates separately from the rest. All the rest operate through that red wire to the alternator.

Check those wires and post back.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Thank you for your advice, I will repair/replace that engine harness and some engine gaskets too, for the oil that escapes and degrades the casing. I'm sure a belly pan would keep the underside clean as well.
