high oil pressure reading. . . 200 1987

lately, my oil pressure gauge has been reading a little high. I haven't driven it long enough lately to actually get the pressure down to reasonable levels, but the recent readings have been higher than the usual start-up numbers. It's been reading as high as 4.5 bars at idle and 5 when driving.

i'm going to check the wiring to make sure the 5 bar reading isn't actually a bad connection, but could it be anything other than that or a clogged flame trap?

Like Bruce said, the colder temps and higher viscocity is a likely candidate. Get the oil nice and toasty on a good freeway jaunt and see if the pressure settles down to 'normal'.

The flame trap wouldn't do a thing. If for some strange reason you had 50psi in your crankcase I'll bet most gaskets would have blown out by now. However, a partially clogged oil filter could have the effect on oil pressure you noticed, and might even be bypassing.

You might also have to rule out gauge/sender problems by hooking up a mechanical gauge.
