Do any of the Volvo gurus out there know of a good reason why
the speedometer (K10042) on my 1989 240 would stop working but the odometer and trip meter continue to work fine. Is there a quick and dirty solution to this problem? I tried replacing the entire Instrument Panel with another from a 1987, but the odometer and temp gauge were bad, so I put it back.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

About the only thing to go wrong with the speedo is a piece of iron debris gets stuck on the magnet in the meter movement, jamming it. Unfortunately freeing the meter is delicate work on a par with the trouble to reset the odometer on a replacement gauge.
Could be a broken wire or a bad spot on the circuit board too, if the needle movement is unfettered, but that is mostly wishful thinking.

My Friend,
1) A used pick & pull speedo is great to have around so that you can verify the proper function of the sending unit (in rear) and wiring. Plus, if you have an aversion to changing the milage with a "new" speedo, it can easily serve as a source of parts.
2) I have had much experience with the k10042. Remove it (very easy to do) and check the circuit board for solder breaks and check the wiring around the speedo unit itself for breaks. I found a broken wire on my speedo.
3) Check the plastic gear on the speedo itself. They are prone to failure.
4) You could always swap the temp guages from the 89' working unit and combine them with the good speedo cluster from the 87' unit and !viola! good to go.
Post back if you need more help!
Peace & love, Jon

Thanks Jon.
I will cetainly try to "mix and match" a working speedo unit with the
rest of the working components of my current instrument panel.
I wasn't sure if there's a way of replacing just the Speedo
while leaving the Odometer intact. I'll give it shot and report back.

Maxspeed is right - it's the electronic speedometer.
There is a pulse generating deal in the rear axle housing, wire from there connects to back of speedo. In the speedo, from what I guess, is a sort of motor that the pulses drive. That motor drives the speedo needle and the odometer mechanism.
The usual failure is in the odometer mechanism. Speedo works, odo doesn't.
Yours is the reverse, right? Speedo dead, odo works, right?
Gotta be inside the speedo somewhere. Another K10042 ought to work. Try a different one.
Good Luck,
Bob

Yep,, the 89 speedo is electroinc and there is a speed sensor that makes it work.. I do not remember where it is but think its on the tranny,, Get out the Bentley manuel and it tells you where it is..There is a way to test it also, do a search on the board for the problem, I know its listed here somewhere..

Right...But again, the Odometer works while Speed Gauge does not.
So it couldn't possibly be the sensor on the trans.
It's easier said than done to replace the Speedo unit.
First, the mileage gets out of kilter. And, as I described before,
there's no guarantee that the new Speedo will work any better.
I'm still searching for the silver bullet: root cause of
the failure. Is it just a simple chip malfunction? Could
it be a loose connection?
I called a few Speedo Shops and they're looking at $150-200
to repair the unit. I'm still considering taking it apart
myself and hoping for a miracle.
