960 Coil not grounding! 900

Hi, following up on my question regarding coil #4 on my 92 960...

I swapped coil #4 for coil #2 and #1 (different power stages) and cylinder #4 was still not getting any spark.

I took the coil connector off, and found that even though I have ~14V at the positive terminal, the ground is not working.

I tested the +14V with probe to the positive terminal and multimeter grounded to the head. When I grounded the multimeter to the negative terminal for the same coil, I get basically no voltage.

I jumpered the coil wire ground (Green/red) to the ground off cylinder #2. Didn't make a difference. I'm going to try and ground it off #1 now... cross my fingers.

Does anyone know how I can ground the #4 coil?? Could I just ground it to the engine??

Thanks!!

If you're really adventurous and know of a method to fix this, please call me at 765-409-4898!! Thanks!!!!!

Norm

    Norm,

I feel your pain- I'm having the exact same problem. I just swapped a 95 engine into a 92 965 which I picked up cheap after it overheated due to coolant loss. I haven't spent too much time disgnosing it yet because I was recuping from the actual swap! Anyway, I put in new plugs and #4 still looks new except it's wet-no signs of firing. I have the power stages from the 92 engine so I will probably try swapping them out. I was also going to maybe try and just ground the ground wire from the coil commecto directly to the engine block. Would this not work/ At least as a temp measure? If I solve this problem I will report back here- hopefully you will figure it out before i do and let me know! Good luck

    Ned

I think you are on to something but it is not the ground. Try swapping the power stages, they are located on the bulbous part of the intake manifold, there are two, one on each side facing front and back. I think when you switch them you will find that another cylinder will be missfiring and #4 will be fine. It could also be the connection on either plugs to the power stages that is causing your problem. If swapping power stages changes the misfire to another cylinder, then it is the power stage that is bad, not unheard of on the board.
