Coolant leak near the back of the engine?? 200 1989

It's coming from where the heater hose connects at the back of the engine head. My question is this: Has anyone ever had this problem? Car started running hot, we pulled over and lots of steam. Managed to get car home by stopping three or four times, letting engine cool off, then refilling coolant reservoir. As soon as you start pouring in coolant, there was water running out of the back side of the engine. Best I can tell (it was dark then...haven't looked at today)..I think it's the heater hose(s). Was worried that maybe the heater pipe broke...or even worse...the head gasket blew or something. I checked the engine oil...no problem. Help!!

There are two heater hoses back there. Change them both, BTDT. It's kind of tight back there. I laid a piece of plywood across the fender and the top of the engine so I could lay over the place where I was working. When you go to remove the hoses from the two heater nipples on the firewall, carefully slit the hoses down to the nipple but DON"T cut into the metal. This wil help to get the hoses off of the nipples. You don't want to have to do this again so I'd go and get the OEM hoses from the Volvo dealer.

A common problem is the metal water bypass tube that runs from the water pump around the back of the engine. Ususally the leak develops at the bracket. Check this out & good luck!

Thanks for everyone's help.

If it is the metal water bypass tube, can I use a soft rubber patch with hose clamps or do I need to buy another metal tube? What's the metal tube used for? You mentioned that it comes off of the water pump....where does it route the water to? heater?

They probably used a metal tube instead of a rubber hose because of the heat from the engine and exhaust. It runs along the side to the back where it connects to the heater hose.
