Am I forever doomed to piston slap? 700

1988 744 TIC

Not that it really matters that much to me but I am beginning to think (after a small comment from a friend) that my engine's piston slap really isn't flattering to the engine. So, is there any way to get rid of piston slap?

I know that the new B230 blocks had oil coolers for the pistons that prevented it and I am hoping to eventually do a little swap. But until that day comes, what can I do?

Thanks,
Eamon

It may not be the piston slap, but the valve hushers not hushing anymore. They're little pieces of rubber on the bottom of the cam buckets.

Replacing 'em makes a good excuse to do a cam swap too. :)

Noise in the valve train wouldn't vary with throttle load like piston slap does.
I wonder if the valve husher noise would quiet down as the engine warms up.

yes, you are doomed. unless you bore the block and replace the pistons. good luck, chuck.

Even that's not guaranteed to work. My B230FT still slaps a little at idle even after a complete rebuild. The pistons were fitted to the bores by a prefessional shop before reassembly too. The slap is a LOT less then before the rebuild though. If you want to be 99.9% sure you're rid of the slap, drop a '93+ B230 in (piston oil coolers). That's what I would have done if I could have found one. Oh well, mine works just fine :) Oh, you can *try* using a different oil. Maybe a different brand or synthetic or something like 15W40. There wasn't much of a difference between non-syn and synthetic for my B230FT though.
