Speaker recomadations 200

I usually frequent the 960 board, but we have a new addition to the family. A mint 89 240 GL. We love the car except for the 15 year old stereo. I am installing a Pioneer DEH-1600 head unit with a Metra adaptor plate. The question now turns to speakers. I believe the front door speakers are 4"? What are some good replacement speakers that will fit in the doors with the original grill? I also want to add a pair to the rear shelf. Does the car come prewired? What size speakers fit here? Thanks for your help.

doors: Boston Acoustic C700II's- perfect fit, no cutting or spacers. I don't think these are still available, but i sure do love the way they sound. Maybe you can find a pair somewhere.

rear shelf: suitable 6x9's... no cutting with spacer, or surface mount with cutting. (mine= surface mounted)

With a reference to Tony's post, I am happy with my rear 6" speakers. I should add that I also put in tweeters in the fibreboard shelf (on top of the metal shelf), and high pass filters under the shelf. Speakers are German made Sinus 16iL. Pretty easy installation, but some cutting was involved:

Oh, P.S. you don't have to take off the Door Panel to take the speakers out

Yes, the Front speakers are 4". If youy want to reuse the Original grills (I did the same thing) you will need to literally cut the original speakers out of the Grill Bracket. Then you can put tye new speakers in the door panel and lay the Grill Bracket over it, screw it all into the door.
Any Speakers you buy will blow the stock ones away. The stock ones are, like 12 amp speakers to match the 8 amp radio.
Be careful with the new speakers, If they are too deep, they will smack the window. I spaced my speakers out just under 1/8th ". The grills stick away from the door panel but it's not offensive.

The rears: no , the car isn't wired. If you look in the trunk at the way the rear deck supports are there, there isn't a clean way of mount 6 x 9's without doing some cutting. I opted to make boxes and installed the speakers facing forward, they are directly behind the Rear headrests. The wires, I ran down the drivers side of the car , I lifted up the Black plastic that runs along the Door opening (it just pulls up). same along the back door and tucked it along the rear seat. you can get it in the trunk from there or , in my case I ran them up the back of the rear seat and attached to my boxes.
Someone else will pipe in but I heard that 6" round speakers work out pretty well on the rear deck.

I think the front door speakers in my 84 GL are smaller than 4". Did they change size somewhere along the way? I thought they were all the same.

      - I think you can but a piece so you don't have to do the cutting. I had aftermarket speakers (as crappy as the OEM's) in an old 240 of mine and I seem to remember the bracket having a very finished look to it.

Crutchfield sent me an adapter to make their speakers work with the factory grill. Didn't have to cut anything and it worked like a champ. I'd just call Crutchfield.
