new shoes, cylinder, no axle turn....? 120-130

OK, so I just reassembled my whole left rear break system with new shoes and a new cylinder after that "getting the drum off" saga that you all helped me with below.

Now that I've got everything back together, I put new fluid in and pumped it and bled it. Then I went to put the drum back on and that all went fine. I did not crank down on the axle's castle-nut however, just in case something might be wrong inside. What I found, with the drum loosely back on, was that the whole thing will not turn. I'm sure it can't be friction from the shoes, as I have the adjuster mechanism at the bottom all the way in. It's more like it has a little play, then kind of clanks and locks from moving further.

I only have the left rear wheel jacked up off the ground. Do I need both wheels in the air to turn it? Unfortunately I did not think to check if it was freely moving before I took the wheel and then the drum off in this whole process. The e-brake is full down to the floor also.

What's going on here? I'm so close, but since I can't turn it, I can't adjust the shoes and get movin' again !?!?!

Glad to hear you got it all sorted out.

One problem I have encountered (which you luckily didn't) was with new shoes, and now drums... Seems the shoes were a bit big to fit inside the new drums. Still havn't figgered that one out though... I just used some old drums. I expect if I use the new drums, I'll have to fit old shoes and wear them in... or turn the drums a couple thousandths...

You DO have the gearshift in neutral, right? because if it is in gear,
it will do exactly as you describe.

How did you finally get the drum off?

      George (and Phil),

DOH!! Can't believe I didn't think of that. I clicked it to N and sure enough it spins freely.

      Thanks, thanks thanks!

Hmmmm, good point there. It's an automatic... but I should check if it is in park.

I eventually caved in and had a friendly mobile volvo specialist come and help me for $30-bucks. He made quick work of it with the proper dambed tool! I lacked the patience to try to find a rental shop around town with the proper type, or order if from JC Whitney.

If it is an automatic and in park, it will not turn unless both wheels are
        up. Put it in neutral.

Really gotta show those drums WHO is the boss! They will not yield to
suggestion or intimation. Brute force is the only valid answer unless they
are about to come off anyway. (I've had that happen....)

"...as I have the adjuster mechanism at the bottom all the way in..."

Not. if it's the late square type adjuster. If it's the 'star wheel" type adjuster, back it off - allow the shoes to 'come in'

in is out with the square ('67) adjuster
back it off - back it out.

"..Do I need both wheels in the air to turn it?"

I believe that if it's in neutral, you should be able to rotate the wheel (put the wheel on the drum - more leverage), though you'll have the added resistence of turning the pumpkin - (we call this 'grabbing the grapefruit').

mucho mas facil (much easier) if both wheels are jacked up.

it's a slow saturday evening here in the apple.

      It's a '67. It has a square pegged adjuster.

I'm not quite following what you're trying to say however?

Ahh, Girling (lucky you, the easy to find and cheap WC's)! I also have a '67 but with the Wagner rear brakes (star adjuster inside).

        Mike!

by turning the square peg adjuster "in" you are adjusting the shoes "out"
with new shoes, thicker than the old shoes, you want to back off on the adjuster to allow the drum back on over the new shoes. so back it off a lot. then when you get the drum on and turning freely, you can then adjust the shoes out by screwing the square peg in, a few flats at a time, rotating the wheel in between. lock 'em up and then back it off a few.

          Yep,

That was the plan. Will be doing that tomorrow.

          Thanks.
