Just bought a small camping trailer, Coleman Taos, that weighs about 1200 pounds. Once in a while we'll pull same 200 miles to camp, and will carry maybe 150 pounds of bicycles and accountrements. The wife and I add up to about 250 soaking wet. Then there's a tank of gas. And maps.

Do I need to add a trans oil cooler or anything? Any other trailering advice welcome.

(As a younger man, I had jobs driving a wrecker and delivering tractors with truck and trailer - so I'm OK with driving - just want to preserve the brick as much as possible.)

91 740 wagon, automatic, 170K

Thanks,
PM

I would use synthetic trans fluid and a trans cooler. I recently pulled one from a 760 turbo that looks like it will bolt right up to my 93 245.

I've pulled a heck of alot more than that with mine ( even a diesel ) with no problems. Just do like the manual says and turn the overdrive off ( OK on long flat stetches on the freeway I'll kick the OD in , but it's not recommended , I'm also running synthetic tranny fluid)
The folks on the other side of the pond pull MUCH larger travel trailers than that with these things.

I towed that much routinely with my 245; it had a Hayden trans cooler and Moog "Cargo Coil" rear springs.
I now use a '90 765T, which has the cooler stock, and Nivomats, and gets there a lot faster.

A transmission cooler is certainly a good idea if you can swing it.

I could consider synthetic transmission fluid a requirement in either case. It's heat that kills the fluid and then burnt fluid that kills the tranny. Synth will withstand all of this much better.

I have towed that much weight with a 240. You realize the car will be a slug. It will do it just fine, but will be a slug. You may also need to condsider some sort of suspension improvement like IPD overload coils.
