Wagon power antenna? 200

From time to time, I see power antennas offered on eBay that purport to fit a 245. To my knowledge wagons never came with power antennas, right? Can a power antenna that goes up and down as the radio is turned on and off be easily installed? Anyone ever do it on an late model 245?

Wagon power antenna? 200

My 1988 240 GL wagon (Australian spec, Swedish make) has a power antenna. It did not work when I bought it 3 years ago and needed a new mast - a simple job of feeding in the beaded plastic line. Now it does not work again, it was ratcheting over the beads and pulling in only half way, I pushed it down by force and this killed it.

My first 245, (built in November '83 and officially badged as an '84 240GL) had a power antenna factory fitted.

The antenna on ours was fitted to the passenger side front guard (fender for Americans). I remember that the 20 year old connections weren't the best by the time we sold it, you'd go over a bump and your radio would cut out, then you'd have to raise and lower the antenna a few times till it reconnected.

My 245 has one also. Its mounted in the same place the 244s mount - just between the left rear wheel and the spare. I replaced mine and its tricky getting the mast vertical - the wagon's sheet metal curves up to the side window while the sedan flattens out to the trunk.

I have seen one that used a Caddy Eldorado Power antenna that had a long flexi section between the motor and the head (part that mounted to the fender) and the guy did a rework of the sheetmetal to blend it in.

Lots of handwork, mig welding, bondo and paint for an exclusive look...not worth it IMHO.
