'96 965 Failed Inspection- No Back-Up Lights 900

I went in for my annual Mass state inspection this morning and to my surprise I had no back up lights. Since they hadn't entered the car in the machine yet they were real nice and offered to let me go get it fixed instead of putting a big "REJECT" sticker on my windshield.

I've forgotten if the PNP switch is involved in this feature? I'm still running on my original at 118K miles.

I'd like to go to the dealer and get the most likely part at noon today if someone has a good idea about the most likely failed part.

Anyone?

On your 965, the PNP sensor controls the backup lights. Check the bulbs as already recommended. I suggest rowing the shifter (engine off) from P to L a couple dozen times and see if your backup lights work. This should get you thru the inspection.

Yeh, after I checked the wiring diagram in my manual and checked the fuses for power, (They were OK), the lights started to work after a couple more "rows".

My dealer had a PNP switch on the shelf, (inventory item of course), so I picked it up at lunch time and will put it in this weekend.

I plan to disassemble the thing and clean re-lube as a spare.

I guess 118K is not too bad for a first time change in Volvoworld. Sure beats the early 960s. Let's see now, I'm coming up on 112K... m-m-m-m.

I had this problem on my '86 240. The neutral safety switch located under the gearshift cover had worn out. Normally, when the shift lever is in reverse, this switch is closed and supplies power to the backup lights. But over time, the contacts wear out.

Believe the PNP is separate. You may want to check if both bulbs are burned out, if the selector switch is adjusted correctly. With the ign. sw. on, run your gear selector through the gears and see if the lights come on. Any fuses out?

    Good luck with gremlins,
